7 reasons why the WiiU is bound to fail.
Despite my inability to write list articles with more than 5 'things', I've been able to branch out when it comes to this post because the WiiU is just so bad. Here's the 7 main reasons:
7) Nintendo didn't actually mention what it is.
The advert which I first saw about the WiiU was the one with the zombies and everything. To start with the advert was only shown about twice so nobody is going to have a clue what the product is. Secondly, in the advert they much a big deal over the 'new' controller (despite the fact it's basically a fat psp), that they sort of forgot to mention what you really do with it. If you can fully play the game on the gamepad, surely it's just another Nintendo DS? It's got a bit of a identity crisis, which Nintendo are surprisingly reluctant to solve.
6) You can buy a fridge with a better touch screen
I actually came up with these reason as a joke, before a quick Google search confirmed it was actually true. Don't believe me, click here. Anyway. The WiiU uses the same single-touch display as the DS. This didn't actually matter for the DS because we got given a handy stylus which did all the work for us. The problem is, this time you're actually going to have to use the touch-screen with your fingers. The only outcome I can see is thousands of people struggling to throw some stupid little ninja star at the screen because none of their touches are recognised.
5) Nintendo made themselves too portable
After the Wii, it was as if Nintendo had forgotten how to build an actual console. For years we just saw version after version of the Nintendo DS, so much so that we recognised the whole company as 'the people that made the DS'. This means that we were all a bit taken back when the WiiU was realised, and as a result, fairly sceptical.
4) Making us multitask
The bizarre combination between the game displaying on the gamepad and the screen is just stupid. If something is happening on the screen, the last thing I want to do is look away at a smaller, annoying screen to do something else. I guess Nintendo would argue that it makes the games more realistic, but surely by now we have realised that being realistic isn't actually fun? For those that disagree with me on this, imagine getting shot in Call Of Duty and not being able to play for 6 weeks whilst your wounds healed.
3) It seems like they are doing it for the sake of it
The Wii was a great idea. A simple controller which was super easy and fun to use. It was so successful that Sony and Microsoft soon developed Playstation Move and Xbox Kinect. It's highly likely that these products were in the pipeline already, but I'm sure the Wii definitely raised the bar. The problem is, with such a successful console behind them, why go and make it different? If it ain't broke don't fix it! Somebody needs to tell them that.
2) Nobody will upgrade
When a new PS3 or Xbox is released, dedicated gamers are quick to upgrade their console to get the better graphics and interface etc. Now look at the average Wii player. If they cared about graphics and all that, they wouldn't have bought the console in the first place, so they definitely wouldn't upgrade for that. All they want is an easy to use, light hearted gaming console, and Nintendo has already ticked that box.
1) It's too expensive
For all the bad points of WiiU, they are actually charging about $300 for it (£350 with the deluxe bundle). You can get a PS3 for about £150, and an Xbox for even less. So why would we ever bother getting a WiiU. To be honest, I really don't see it. It costs more, and it's not as good. Surely it can't succeed?
So that's my little round up of why the WiiU will fail. I remember when the Wii came out, there were several warnings about making sure you use the wrist band, so it doesn't fly off and hit the TV. I think they should issue the same warning for the WiiU, but for when people realise how bad a console it is.
