Is tablet gaming the future?
Tablet sales have rocketed recently, sending the whole market into a huge boom. One key feature of all tablets, regardless of OS, is apps.
What started off as tools from productivity and useful pieces of software has quickly become focused around gaming of all genres.
This is due to the super fast processors that leading tablets now run on. This means graphics capabilities are very high and games of high quality can run smoothly.
I think another reason that tablet gaming has taken off is due to the fact we have all become obsessed with touch screens. We've been using touch screens on our phones for years now, and so our obsession has grown to the point where we want to d everything we possible can on a touch screen.
So there's no doubt that tablet gaming is a huge industry that is growing fast, but will it stick around? Will tablet gaming take over and become the number 1 gaming platform?
Well first lets look at the advantages, as there are so many of them.
- cheap to make
Developing an App is relatively inexpensive, and profit can easily be made back if that app requires purchasing from an App Store.
- app stores target multiple devices
Placing an app on Google Play store will make it available for any android device. This isn't as true for iOS, but it would still reach both iPhone and iPad users.
- people don't mind paying for them
For the majority of people, a couple of quid isn't going to make much of a dent in their wallet, and people are far more likely to buy an app for £2 than a console game for £40.
- updates are so damn easy
It's so simple to update an app as users will just receive a notification informing them it's available. It couldn't be easier.
- make even more money with in app purchases
Once users have got addicted, there is a high chance they will buy exclusive content within the app (better weapons etc). It's makes the apps consistently profitable!
- the app might just go viral.
Users playing games on their tablet or phone are more likely to show/challenge friends. Apps that go viral can make huge profits so it's a win-win.
So what's the catch?
Well, there aren't that many disadvantages, but the ones that are present are quite big. For example I think users will also prefer a controller to a touchscreen.
I also think that tablet games are much smaller than full console versions and could therefore be completed very quickly.
Having said all this, for the write type of games, producing an App is a no-brainer, but for others, it's best to stick to a good 'ol console.
