Tablet computing - The death of productivity

Tablets are on the rise, there's no doubt about it. Last Christmas they were first on all of our Christmas lists, and most of us got one. The problem is, which so many apps and games at our fingertips, it's very easy to waste hours playing, instead of working.

It's hard to be sure, but I'd take a calculated guess that the majority of time spent on tablets goes towards playing games rather than working. Just look at the App Store. The featured apps are always games, never some genius creation to boost productivity.

This of course is assuming that using our tablets in the first place isn't a replacement for doing other work we have to do. This could be either school work or office work, but tablets are slowly taking up all of our time, decreasing productivity.

I've previously mentioned how twitter decreases productivity, but to be honest, tablets seem to be far worse.

I've also mentioned the effects of the decrease, but I'll quickly summarise. Basically, if productivity decreases, less gets done. If less gets done then output decreases, and if that happens, it's just a disaster really.

So what should we do about this? We can't ban tablets or even ban them in the workplace, but there is something we can do. We need to create an incentive for developers create apps for maximisation of productivity. We need high quality apps that make it easy and enjoyable for us to do work, then tablets can really come into their own.
