Are flexible phone screens a step forward?
Samsung has recently unveiled new technology that is leading the way in terms of phone display technology. These new OLED screens are light and flexible, but are they necessary?
Naturally, these screens have quite an obvious array of benefits. They are incredibly light, completely scratch resistant, unbreakable and of course they can bend!
At first this concept seems to be the biggest smartphone advancement of the decade, these screens require very little battery life to run, so what Samsung are really creating is a slim, light, unbreakable phone with incredible battery life, so what's so bad about that?
Personally, my problem is the novelty factor. I really think that soon enough, people will want to actually be able to feel there phone in their pocket, and just be able to touch it normally without the screen just bending as they do so. I just don't think it's all that user friendly.
What's really annoying is the big manufacturers probably know this, but will no doubt create some brainwashing ad campaign to convince everyone that it is essential to life.
Here's a nice little video for you:
Despite what I have said I do believe that this technology is incredibly useful, for the use shown later on in the video, screens that can fold. The ability to have a phone that simply unfolds to be a tablet would be a great selling point, and one that really could make a difference in the phone/tablet market.
So all in all, I reckon flexible phones are simply a novelty that will wear off, but if that technology could be incorporated into a stronger, foldable device, well then that my friend, is fucking cool.
