Is the world just wasting it's time?
Everyday, more and more research is carried out in order to provide the world with stupid technologically advanced products that are later sold to the general public as a necessity. A prime example being the flexible phone screen that I mentioned in a previous post. (Read it here) If you agree with what I said in that post you hopefully realise that we simply don't need products such as these. The fact that a phone can't bend has never been a problem, so why does there need to be a solution?
I reckon that if these researchers looked at actual recognised problems instead of just flooding the market will unnecessary devices, they could create something genuinely beneficial to a lot of people. So, I ask myself, what is an international problem that research could provide a solution for?
Although many answers spring to mind, the one that I thought of first was transportation. With fossil fuels running out and road tax rising, now is a great opportunity to dedicate some time to finding a solution. Let me show you just a glimpse of what I'm talking about.

What may look like a machine only available in video games, is in fact a fully functioning Jetpack. I genuinly think you cannot get much cooler than that. It may seem very impractical and bulky, but this is just the start. I mean, this is what the first computer looked like:
With all the research and development that went towards a computer, the results were quite frankly incredible, so what would happen if that same time and effort went towards a jetpack? The fact it actually works suggests that all that needs to be done is making it smaller, more efficient, safer etc. How hard can it be?
Just before you think I'm considering the idea that the whole world should travel by jetpack, try and think about this post a little less literally, it's not just about jetpacks, but the power of research and development. Surely you can see that for the world to be solving problems that don't exist, they are preventing us from producing some amazing machines. Just think about it, is the world wasting it's time?
And just before you go, if you're not convinced, check out the video.
